Corps Officials To Increase Releases From Gavins Point Dam

SDPB

Army Corps of Engineers officials say they will increase releases from Gavins Point Dam by 5,000 cubic feet per second on Saturday.

The announcement comes as state Department of Public Safety officials say they’re seeing high water levels in the state’s reservoirs.

Kristi Turman is the director of the division of emergency services. She says the department is reaching out to communities along the river in preparation of any potential flooding.

“For anyone living along the Missouri River, the important thing is to monitor your local officials, anything coming from them. Monitor your local news and stay informed on the situation,” Turman says. “Be ready. Have you’re preparedness plans in place for your family. We always are encouraging people to have a kid—a disaster supply kit—in case they need to evacuate their home.”

The Department of Public Safety is asking the Corps to review flood prevention plans to make sure they are ready if needed.

Governor Kristi Noem say she’s been in regular communication with the corps during this wet spring.
