New elementary school named for Native American elder Marcella LeBeau

The name for Sioux Falls’ latest elementary school has been selected.

The school will be named after South Dakota Native American elder and Army Nurse Corps veteran Marcella LeBeau.

The naming of the elementary school is significant for many community members.

Dawn Marie Johnson is a school board member for the Sioux Falls School District. She is affiliated with the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation. She joins "In the Moment" for conversation on the significance of the naming of the new school.

Marcella LeBeau Elementary School is scheduled to open fall of 2025.
