The Huron School District plans to expand technical education by adding to their high school after receiving a grant.
John Halbkat is the Director of Buildings and Grounds for the district.
“We believe that this addition can bring on, probably upwards to four career tech ed elective courses into our current offerings. Which is going to be huge. We’ve got a lot of students that are looking for that course that might give them the hook to put them down a career path and this is going to check a lot of boxes,” said Halbkat.
The money stems from the state legislature which set aside money for future development of CTE programs.
Jolene Konechne is the Director of ESL, CTE, Federal Programs and Accreditation. She was the first to publicly announce a grant was awarded to the district.
“I went through the budget with the teachers, and we targeted the kind of areas that would fit this and cut out duplicate equipment. Then we partnered with Sanborn Central, Hitchcock Tulare, and Wolsey Wessington," said Konechne.
Some of the schools benefiting from the five-million-dollar senate bill are Northeast Technical High School in Watertown, the Willow Lake School District, and Sioux Falls CTE academies.
