South Dakota State University officials say the school's Dairy Research and Training Facility will close by the end of this upcoming June.

This decision came an updated estimate for renovations at the facility projected a cost of over $28 million.

School officials called the fundraising goal "not achievable" in a press release.

However, the closure of the Dairy Research and Training Facility is not expected to change other aspect's of SDSU's dairy science program - including operations of the school's beloved dairy bar.

“South Dakota State University will continue to offer the same high-quality degree programs in dairy production, dairy manufacturing, and food science,” said Joseph Cassady, Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences. “We will work with dairy industry partners to provide opportunities in modern, large-scale dairy production facilities for student experiential learning.”

Because of the halt to renovation plans and total facility closure, a $7.5 million investment approved by the 2021 state legislature for the project will not be used.
