This interview originally aired on In the Moment on SDPB Radio.

A new book examines the gap in knowledge that might be fueled by how kids learn to read. Natalie Wexler is an education writer and the author of "The Knowledge Gap: The Hidden Cause of America's Broken Education System—and How to Fix It."

She joins In the Moment to discuss the issues with how kids are taught now and how science says we could solve those problems.

Lori Walsh is a special correspondent with SDPB and host of the "In the Moment" podcast.
Ellen Koester served as a producer of "In the Moment," SDPB's daily news and culture broadcast.
