"Teachers Of The Year" Offer Teaching From Home Tips

In The Moment ... April 28, 2020 Show 806 Hour 1

Thousands of South Dakota parents and caregivers are working with classroom teachers on-at-home learning. Many feel that they are now "teachers" at home and woefully ill-prepared. To help, we talk with South Dakota Teacher of the Year winners about how parents can be better teachers during a crisis. What can they tell us about the best way to communicate with student classroom teachers? How do you encourage kids to think more deeply about the lessons at hand? What can they tell us about learning to read, tackling "new" ways of mathematic problem solving, embracing the scientific process?
Joining us are Erica Boomsma, 2019 South Dakota Teacher of the Year and 4th-grade teacher at the Washington 4-5 Center in the Huron School District, Amanda Harris, 2020 South Dakota Teacher of the Year, and 4th-grade teacher at Endeavor Elementary in the Harrisburg School District, and Lori Wagner, 2017 Daktronics Outstanding Math Teacher, 2014 Regional Teacher of the Year, and a member of the South Dakota Board of Education Standards.
