National Park Service ranger Mary Laycock retired from 34 years of service last month. One of her duties at Wind Cave National Park was conducting historic tours of the cave for students – an activity she began in 1990.

South Dakota Public Broadcasting accompanied “Ranger Mary” on her last official historic tour of Wind Cave on November 20, 2013, along with students from Mrs. Rebecca Massa’s 3rd grade class at the Hot Springs Elementary School.

As usual, “Ranger Mary” dressed in period costume and assumed the role of Mary McDonald – daughter of J.D. McDonald, who was hired to oversee the claim on the “mining site" by the South Dakota Mining Company .
