Despite Sioux Falls’ population continuing to grow, the crime rate remains stable.
Major crimes have decreased, according to a new report from the city. That includes crimes like homicides, robberies, and domestic assaults.
Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken said as a population grows, total crimes will go up.
"Since 2018 we've grown by an Aberdeen in Sioux Falls," said Mayor TenHaken. " Crime is up, but look closely at per capita crime. When that starts to get out of whack and grows at a disproportionate rate to population, you do have a crime problem. But the city of Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County have done a good job of keeping that line steady."
The one crime that has risen significantly is vehicle thefts. City officials said most of these thefts are due to leaving keys inside of vehicles. Late last year, the city launched a public service campaign encouraging residents to keep their car keys with them and lock their vehicles.
