Sioux Falls police say they’ve arrested several people in connection to an outdoor street racing event.
Nine men have been charged, but authorities say they’re still seeking other suspects.
It all stems from an event on the eastern edge of the city in October.
Lt. Andrew Siebenborn said police they received a tip about an organized, illegal drag racing competition. When officers arrived, they found around 50 vehicles at the scene.
Authorities did not make any arrests at the time. Police say months of investigation revealed the event was sponsored and cash prize money was paid to the winners.
Siebenborn said he has never seen this level of organized, illegal street racing in Sioux Falls.
The charges, which range from reckless driving to gambling, were announced this week. Police said they’ve arrested eight of the nine men charged. Most are from the Sioux Falls area; one is from Watertown and another is from Inwood, Iowa.
