Authorities are investigating a former Watertown teacher over accusations of sexual misconduct involving a student.
Jordan Bakken arrested Thursday on several felony charges including fourth-degree rape and solicitation of a minor, according to a spokesperson with the South Dakota attorney general’s office.
The charges were filed in Brookings County.
Bakken was an English teacher at Watertown High School. District officials said he has resigned, pending board approval. He is not allowed on school grounds.
The district sent a message to parents notifying them of an inappropriate relationship involving a teacher and student. That letter, which is signed by district superintendent Jeff Danielsen, said there is no indication any other students were involved.
"We strongly condemn the actions of this individual and regret this incident happened," the message stated. "The Watertown School District wants you to know that we make our students’ safety and well-being of the utmost importance."
The state DCI is leading the investigation.
