A federal judge sentenced a Waubay woman to five years in prison for allegedly embezzling over $200,000 from a tribal organization.
Kayline Joy LaBelle pleaded guilty to embezzlement and theft charges, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of South Dakota.
Authorities said LaBelle embezzled the money while acting as treasurer of the Buffalo Lake District of the Sisseton Wahpeton Tribebetween 2018 and 2022.
In addition to prison time, LaBelle was ordered to pay over $200,000 in restitution and serve an addition three years of supervised release.
Four accomplices were charged with helping LaBell. Two have pleaded guilty, and two others are awaiting trial.
