A state board has suspended a Brookings police officer for using excessive force during an arrest.

The Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission unanimously ruled officer Damien Weets engaged in conduct unbecoming of an officer.

Wednesday's hearing stemmed from an arrest and subsequent booking in April. The suspect in that arrest accused Weets of slamming him into a bench and knocking him unconscious.

The law enforcement commission suspended Weets for a year. He will also have to undergo a psychological evaluation and additional training to be considered for reinstatement.
