State officials are investigating after a Sioux Falls police officer shot and injured a suspect during a foot chase.

Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum said a man broke into a garage Thursday night. When the homeowner confronted him, the suspect threatened him with a gun then fled.

Officers saw a man matching the suspect’s description walking down a nearby street early Friday morning. He ran off when police tried stopping him.

During the ensuing chase, an officer encountered the suspect in a backyard and shot him. Thum said the suspect was armed, but he did not specify whether the suspect pointed his gun at the officer.

The suspect was treated and released at a Sioux Falls hospital, then taken into custody.

Attorney General Mary Jackley said the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident, which is standard in any officer-involved shooting.
