The Benedictine Peace Center and the Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery invite the public to a lecture by Father John Klassen, OSB on Thursday, November 13, at 7:00 P.M. The presentation titled Deep Listening: Obedience and Humility in the Rule of Benedict goes to the heart of Benedictine spirituality and invites each of us-lay oblates, professed monastics, or others drawn to Benedict’s wisdom-to ways of cultivating these virtues in everyday life. Listening mindfully to God, people, and situations beckons us to respond to life with an open heart and humble spirit.

Father John Klassen, OSB, served as Abbot of his community of monks at Saint John’s Abbey, Collegeville, MN, for 23 years. Shaped by his experience of Benedictine monastic life, John has given numerous retreats for men and women across the U.S. and engaged with other monastic sponsors to foster the mission of Benedictine higher education. More recently, Fr. John experienced a five-month immersion in the Spanish language, culture, and hospitality of the community of Abadía del Tepeyac in Mexico, and returned to the abbey to work in abbey development and serve in a variety of ministries.

The University Libraries at the University of South Dakota is presenting its biennial international altered book exhibition “Bound and Unbound VIII,” juried by Bratislava, Slovakia-based altered book artist and illustrator, Isobelle Ouzman, now through Jan. 5, 2026.

“Bound and Unbound VIII” is located in the exhibition cases on the second floor of the I.D. Weeks Library. It is open to the public for viewing during library operating hours, which can be found online. The University Libraries Art and Exhibits Committee, sponsor of the exhibition, seeks to showcase a diverse range of international altered book art, to present the work locally and to build an online research collection of altered books.

Rare Jefferson Peace Medal Exhibit at Mead Museum

An original 220-year old Jefferson Peace Medal on loan to the Mead Museum is on display as part of the Journeying Forward: Connecting Cultures exhibit. The 4-inch Jefferson Peace Medal is extremely rare and a historically significant artifact from the early 19th century.
The peace medals were commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson as part of diplomatic efforts with Native American tribes, serving as symbols of goodwill and alliance between the U.S. government and Indigenous leaders. The Lewis & Clark Expedition handed out 89 of them to leaders of Native Nations on their journey between 1804-1806. This medal is one of less than 5 on display in the world!
In addition to the peace medal, the Journeying Forward exhibit also had an upgrade in its history of the Ihanktonwan and Oceti Sakowin Nations, an important narrative to Yankton regional history.
The Mead Museum is located at 82 Mickelson Dr in Yankton SD. The Museum is open weekdays 10AM to 5PM and on Saturdays/Sundays from 1PM to 5PM.

The National Music Museum presents organist Marie Rubis Bauer, Archdiocesan Director of Music and Cathedral Organist at Saint Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha, in a special performance on the Museum’s rare 1808 Dieffenbach organ (NMM 04905). Built in Bethel, Pennsylvania, and originally installed in Zion Lutheran & Reformed Church in Orwigsburg, this towering Pennsylvania-German tracker organ stands nearly 12 feet tall, features 306 pipes, and is one of only seven Dieffenbach organs still in existence—the only one preserved in a major public collection. The concert will take place in the Richard Cutler Gallery, where the instrument is featured as part of the NMM’s Music & Spirituality exhibition. Audiences are invited to experience the remarkable sound of this historic organ in the hands of a distinguished performer whose career has spanned major concert venues in the U.S. and Europe, with performances hailed for their artistry and depth of interpretation.
