Rare Jefferson Peace Medal Exhibit at Mead Museum

An original 220-year old Jefferson Peace Medal on loan to the Mead Museum is on display as part of the Journeying Forward: Connecting Cultures exhibit. The 4-inch Jefferson Peace Medal is extremely rare and a historically significant artifact from the early 19th century.
The peace medals were commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson as part of diplomatic efforts with Native American tribes, serving as symbols of goodwill and alliance between the U.S. government and Indigenous leaders. The Lewis & Clark Expedition handed out 89 of them to leaders of Native Nations on their journey between 1804-1806. This medal is one of less than 5 on display in the world!
In addition to the peace medal, the Journeying Forward exhibit also had an upgrade in its history of the Ihanktonwan and Oceti Sakowin Nations, an important narrative to Yankton regional history.
The Mead Museum is located at 82 Mickelson Dr in Yankton SD. The Museum is open weekdays 10AM to 5PM and on Saturdays/Sundays from 1PM to 5PM.

The Sturgis Public Library and the Sturgis & Meade County Historical Society will be hosting their monthly genealogy work group on Saturday, November 1st at 1pm at the Meade County Administration Building. This month there will a presentation by a special guest. We welcome Lana Anderson, Meade County Register of Deeds, who will be presenting a program about using the local Register of Deeds office to do research. She will not only be presenting, but hosting us as well! The program will be held at the Register of Deeds Office, where we will get a behind the scenes idea about what records are available, what you can expect to learn from them, and how best to access them. Public is welcome!

Thirty-three years! Come tantalize your taste buds at the “33rd Annual Cheesecake Sampler & Battle of the Hors D’oeuvres.” The event will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025 at the Roundhouse (Dakota Gold Corp) 106 Glendale, Lead SD with food from 5-7 p.m. and cash bar open until 8 p.m. Last year's event sold out. Tickets are $25, they can be purchased in advance and at the door until gone.
One hundred dollar cash prize for best overall cheesecake (Linda Maxwell Cheesecake Diva Award); and, one hundred dollars for best overall hors d’oeuvre. And also a fifty dollar cash prize for People’s Choice for both cheesecakes and hors d’oeuvres.

The University Libraries at the University of South Dakota is presenting its biennial international altered book exhibition “Bound and Unbound VIII,” juried by Bratislava, Slovakia-based altered book artist and illustrator, Isobelle Ouzman, now through Jan. 5, 2026.

“Bound and Unbound VIII” is located in the exhibition cases on the second floor of the I.D. Weeks Library. It is open to the public for viewing during library operating hours, which can be found online. The University Libraries Art and Exhibits Committee, sponsor of the exhibition, seeks to showcase a diverse range of international altered book art, to present the work locally and to build an online research collection of altered books.

St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church/Mother Butler Center will hold its annual Fall Bazaar at the Mother Butler Center on Sunday, November 2, 2025, from 10 AM until 3 PM. The Mother Butler Center is located at 231 Knollwood Drive, Rapid City, across the street from the AMC movie theater and next to St. Isaac Jogues Church. The Bazaar will feature a silent auction, door prizes, a 50/50 chance drawing, a raffle for five cash prizes of $500, $400, $300, $200, and $100 each, vendor booths, arts and crafts, plant sale, bingo, baked goods, a food concession (choice of two meals), a country store, face painting, and kid’s games. Raffle tickets and 50/50 chance tickets are available during normal business hours at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church and at the Bazaar for the nominal price of $1.00 each. Entry to the Bazaar is free. Anyone interested in arranging for a vendor booth is invited to contact our Office Manager at (605) 343-2165.
