Amazon has finally made it official: The company will build a fulfillment center in Sioux Falls.

The announcement has been anticipated for months. Construction activity is already visible at the site, near the northwest corner of the I-90 and I-29 junction in an industrial area called Foundation Park.

It will be the company’s first fulfillment center in South Dakota.

“We appreciate the strong support from local and state leaders throughout the process,” said Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon’s vice president of global customer fulfillment, “and we look forward to supporting the South Dakota community with great delivery options.”

The company says the center will open in 2022. It will cover 640,000 square feet and employ 1,000 people. They’ll work alongside robots to pick, pack and ship items to customers. The minimum starting wage is $15 per hour.

Amazon did not disclose the cost to build the center. An infrastructure grant application from the Sioux Falls Development Foundation says Amazon plans to invest $200 million.
