2012 Strong For SD Exports

Despite what could be considered a sluggish economy nationwide experts say manufacturing exports out of South Dakota showed solid numbers in 2012.

Rock Nelson is the Director of South Dakota’s International Trade Center.  The organization began in 2011 with a boost from the Governor’s office of economic development and the business community.  It offers free advice and support for any business thinking about exporting overseas.  Nelson says in 2011 South Dakota exported nearly $1.5-billion dollars of manufactured products, that’s not including grains and livestock.  He expects 2012 to exceed that number.

“Ranges from mining equipment manufacturers, to fire engine manufactures, to a company that makes hydraulic booms that attach to trucks, and yea we’re excited and we’re holding our feet to the fire, says Nelson.

Nelson says the future is bright for exporting.  He says South Dakota based companies are seeing increased foreign business with the potential for a domestic rebound in 2013.
