If interest rates go up due to the fear or reality of a debt default that would have major consequences for real estate sales.

Over the course of April, a series of events geared towards property owners, realtors, and others in the housing business will be held across the state.

Denise Hanzlik, executive director of the South Dakota Multi-Housing Association, said the sessions are designed to help property owners avoid potential discrimination lawsuits.

“A lot of the independent rental owners, who own just a few units, maybe aren’t aware of the federal law," Hanzlik said. "There are, whether it’s the federal government or a fair housing office, they do have testers that will make calls or will visit properties, and that is the task - they are looking for discrimination.”

Sessions will be held both East and West River over the next month. The full schedule can be found at SDMHA.com.
