Startup Sioux Falls is piloting an expanded training program for entrepreneurs thanks to a $1 million grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The Sioux Falls-based non-profit said it empowers founders and startups by offering resources to help network, launch, and grow their ventures.

Jaime Wood, director of the Small Business Administration's South Dakota District, said the money will support the CO.STARTERS business acceleratorprogram. It's is a free 10-week course designed for people of color, rural residents, and those in underserved markets.

According to the Startup Sioux Falls website, entrepreneurs and other experts share their knowledge to help students turn their dreams into a sustainable business.

The pilot program has been running since 2021.

Wood said it's making a difference, especially to the diverse, yet underserved communities she sees all over the state.

"We're getting ready to graduate our first cohort that was completely in Spanish and we've also graduated a cohort of new Americans," Wood said. "There were over 18 people in that class from 12 different countries and at the end of it, every single one of those participants... gave their business pitch in English, which is very hard to do. I really admire the people who are coming here and want to be in our state and help make it even a better state."

The program is part of the larger American Rescue Plan initiative.

The SBA offers several classes designed for entrepreneurs across the state. Learn more and apply at www.startupsiouxfalls.com.
