The US Army Corps of Engineers plans to close Crest Road in Yankton for maintenance projects beginning as early as April 4th. The road crosses the Gavins Point Dam connecting South Dakota and Nebraska.
Next month’s road closure is to allow crews to grade and reshape the drainage system while also repaving and overlaying asphalt on Crest Road to Highway 121.
Justin Scholl is the Chief of Natural Resources for the Gavins Point Project Office. He says if you’ve driven Crest Road recently, you’ll understand why it needs to be replaced. The drainage has become less effective over time from sediment moved by cars and erosion from the hillside beside it.
Scholl says the timing is strategic with the goal of the road being open by the 4th of July weekend.
