How Elevate Rapid City is mitigating brain drain in South Dakota

This segment is from SDPB's monthly news program, South Dakota Focus, hosted by Jackie Hendry.

A Congressional Report says South Dakota suffers one of the nation's highest rates of brain drain. That's when large numbers of highly educated people leave a state.

Some of that drain happens at South Dakota Mines in Rapid City. Graduates with science and engineering degrees can't always find a job or help start a business within the state.

Elevate Rapid City is an economic development organization. It partnered with the university, the city, and other private businesses to provide a space for innovation. SDPB's Arielle Zionts has the story.

Arielle Zionts, rural health care correspondent, is based in South Dakota. She primarily covers South Dakota and its neighboring states and tribal nations. Arielle previously worked at South Dakota Public Broadcasting, where she reported on business and economic development.
