Emma Benoit

Helpline Center

This interview originally aired on In the Moment on SDPB Radio.

Talking about suicide can save lives.

That's the idea behind "My Ascension." The documentary shares Louisiana teenager Emma Benoit's journey of hope and survival. She survived an attempt to die by suicide and uses her story to inspire others.

The Helpline Center is bringing the documentary to South Dakota. Janet Kittams, CEO of Helpline, joins In the Moment to discuss suicide prevention and the importance of breaking the stigma around mental health conversations.

"My Ascension" screens at the Sioux Falls State Theatre on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m., central. It airs on SDPB TV on Monday, Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. central, 7 p.m. mountain.

Benoit will come to South Dakota on Oct. 24 at Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls.

If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, help is available. Call or text 988 anytime 24/7 to connect with mental health resources in your area.
