Chislic became South Dakota's official snack food in 2018.

The fifth annual Chislic Festival is being held on July 29 in Freeman.

Every year the festival attracts thousands of people who want to try the best chislic the state has to offer.

Andrea Baer is President of the Chislic Festival. She said the festival brings together people from across South Dakota to enjoy the official state snack food.

“It is a festival unlike anything else in our region or anywhere, honestly that I know of. In fact we are celebrating something that is so culturally and historically unique to our area," said Baer.

The festival will have a variety of food vendors and activities. Activities include bingo, a smash room and a bean bag tournament.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn more about the history of chislic from Heritage Hall Museum, which is located near the festival.

According to Marnette Hofer, the museum's executive director, the museum will be offering extended hours and "come-and-go" bracelets so that visitors will be able to get out of the heat while seeing the exhibits.
