Fort Pierre Horse Racing will put races on the track yet again this October.
The Verendrye Benevolent Association approved of the 75th annual event in late June.
Horses from across the nation and their jockeys will come to compete at the Stanley County fairgrounds in Fort Pierre. Betting on the horses will be allowed. Besides the official race, the two-day event includes family-orientated activities like stick-horse races for children.
Shane Kramme, Track Manager for Fort Pierre Horse Racing, said the races have become a part of the community over the last 75 years.
“It’s part of our heritage,” said Kramme. “And I think if it's done correctly and maintained, it can it can offer economic benefits, societal benefits, and just a place for everyone to come have fun and you don’t actually have to sit behind a phone or a keyboard. You can come smell these horses, and watch these horses, and watch them compete.”
While horses have raced in Fort Pierre for over half a century, Kramme worries about the sustainability of the tradition. He is lobbying state officials and working with the game commission to secure financial support for the equestrian sport.
