The sighting of the crescent moon officially starts the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which follows the lunar calendar.

Starting Wednesday evening, Muslims in South Dakota and around the world start fasting during daylight hours. But the Islamic holy month of Ramadan is more than just skipped meals.

Mohammad Qamar, MD, is director of interfaith dialog and community outreach at the Muslim Community Center of South Dakota.

He joins In the Moment to discuss the significance of this month and what you can do to support your Muslim neighbors.
