Spearfish Canyon colors update

The interview posted above is from SDPB's daily public affairs show, In the Moment with Lori Walsh.

A sure sign of fall is Spearfish Canyon transforming into color splendor.

Kimberly Talcott lives in Spearfish and is the canyon’s leaf reporter.

She says leaves in the canyon are turning their colors and should hang on trees for a bit longer.

“Because we are not at 100 percent peak yet those leaves are not ready to drop. So even if a big gust of wind comes and those trees still aren’t ready to drop their leaves, they won’t drop them, they will still hang on even with that wind.”

Rain is expected in the northern Black Hills this week. Talcott says that can sometimes pull out the leaves’ s colors even more.

Spearfish Canyon boasts old growth pine mixed with deciduous growth.

The canyon is between 70 and 80 percent of peak colors, which is where it’s expected to remain by the end of this week
