A South Dakota family is being honored for their leadership is promoting sustainable forestry on private forest lands. Bob Burns and Mary LaHood have been named 2021 National Outstanding Tree Farmers of the Year by the American Tree Farm System, a program administered by the American Forest Foundation.
Burns took over the property in 1969, fought alongside U.S. Forest Service personnel to save the area from Stagebarn Fire flames in 1994, and works tirelessly to coordinate with federal officials and local landowners to promote forest well treated to resist wildfires and bark beetle infestations.
