Institute Of American Indian Studies

In The Moment … December 8, 2020 Show 956 Hour 2

The relationship between Native American communities and predominantly white academia is complicated, to say the least. From unethical research practices to racism on campus, there's plenty of work to be done to make higher education accessible and useful for Native students.

The University of South Dakota recently renewed its commitment to that effort by announcing the revitalization of the Institute of American Indian Studies. The institute is dedicated to community-driven research based on Indigenous world views. Scholarships, recruitment, and retention efforts will work to ensure the state's flagship university is a place Native students can thrive.

Elise Boxer is the new director of the Institute of American Indian Studies. She's also an assistant professor of history and coordinator of the Native Studies program at USD, and Damon Leader Charge, the new director of tribal outreach and assistant program coordinator of biomedical sciences at USD join us with more.
