Sioux Falls AFL-CIO President Talks Smithfield Reopening

Sioux Falls AFL-CIO

In The Moment … May 7, 2020 Show 812 Hour 1

Today's confirmed Sars-CoV-2 cases in South Dakota are expected to rise after a pop-up testing site in Sioux Falls has tested more than 2,600 Smithfield plant employees and their families. The plant is working to reopen according to guidance from the CDC. Investigators from the CDC visited the closed plant in mid-April and issued a report with guidance for worker safety and contagion control. President Donald Trump issued an executive order on April 28 calling for operations at America's meat production facilities to continue "uninterrupted to the maximum extent possible while following CDC and OSHA guidelines."

Joining us for a conversation about how workers are navigating the reopening of the plant, we welcome Kooper Caraway. He is the Sioux Falls AFL-CIO president.
