Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve

Chris Laughery

In The Moment ... December 17, 2019 Show 721 Hour 1

Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve's book, "The Christmas Coat: Memories of My Sioux Childhood," is a new edition of a classic book that has recently been released by the South Dakota Historical Society Press.

The author grew up in the Rosebud Reservation. She is a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe who now lives in Rapid City. She has written books for children and adults since 1972 and was one of the first authors to portray Native American children as contemporary kids, rather than historical artifacts. She has also written deeply and thoughtfully about Native American women, another largely unexplored literary point of view.

Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve is the recipient of the Native American Prose Award and the Spirit of Crazy Horse Award. She is the first South Dakotan to receive the National Humanities Medal.

You can see her this weekend as part of "A Christmas Collection: Songs and Stories to Celebrate the Season" at the Performing Arts Center in Rapid City.
