USD To Acquire Supercomputer

The University of South Dakota hopes to bring a new supercomputer to campus. It’s thanks to a major grant from the Board of Regents.

he South Dakota Board of Regents awarded a $200,000 grant to USD. Along with federal funding and institutional aid, the college will acquire a new supercomputer. Officials say super computers lead to scientific research publications and developing new courses.  Research Computing Manager Doug Jennewein says the rapidly changing technology demands upgrading.

“So we’re going to update a supercomputing system that we have on campus already. USD has had one since 2006 and in that amount of time since 2006, the state of the art has changed the needs of science have changed. So what we’re going to do is architect a new system with state of the art computing capabilities and providing the capabilities that the scientists need that we are not able to currently provide,” says Jennewein.

The $200,000 Research and Development grant was among $700,000 the Regents approved for four of the state’s public universities.
