South Dakota Farmers Union president Doug Sombke and ag writer Lura Roti join Midday to talk about life on the farm and the “Celebrate Farm Families” initiative, an online  project to document the lives of farmers and farm families.

The South Dakota Agricultural Foundation has announced the establishment of an endowment fund within the South Dakota Community Foundation. The focus is on investing in the future of the ag industry in the state. Initial partners have committed $1.5 million to this effort over the next five years. South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture Lucas Lentsch and Stephanie Judson, president of the SD Community Foundation, join Midday to talk about the endowment … its genesis, its goals, and its potential impact on family farmers/producers throughout the state.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center has released its seasonal drought outlook. For April through June, forecasters expect drier than average conditions for the eastern edge of South Dakota. The latest weekly U.S. drought monitor map released on Thursday shows 82 percent of the state as either abnormally dry or in moderate drought conditions.

Officials Say South Dakota Rural Economy Slowing

Economists say South Dakota’s rural economy is slowing down. A survey by Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska indicates the Rural Main Street Index fell for the fourth straight month to its lowest level in years.

Creighton Economics Professor Dr. Ernie Goss says an increase in supplies, a decrease in demand for ag-related products, and better weather conditions are contributing to the decline.
