Last week the Brennan Rock & Roll Academy in Sioux Falls announced that it would close its doors before Christmas. A letter from their board of directors said passage of a ballot initiative capping payday lending interest loans impacted the decision. The board added that the majority of donations to the nonprofit music academy came from Dollar Loan Center and, without that sort of funding, the nonprofit would have to be dissolved.

Independent Lens: Muscle Shoals

Apr 17, 2014

Muscle Shoals, Alabama is the unlikely breeding ground for some of America's most creative and defiant music.  At its heart is Rick Hall who founded FAME Studios.  Overcoming crushing poverty and tragedy, Hall brought black and white together in a cauldron of racial hostility to create music for generations.  Filmmaker Greg "Freddy" Camalier directed "Muscle Shoals," which airs Monday night at 8:00 p.m.

Hardly Art

The Moondoggies played The Icon Lounge in Sioux Falls on October 8, 2013.  It was the first concert in a 20-date run for the band from Everett, Washington.  Formed in 2005, The Moondoggies highlight dirty hooks, sweet harmonies, plaintive pleas and an electric edge.  The band has released three albums and one EP on the Hardly Art label.  Their most recent, "Adios I'm a Ghost," introduced listeners to 12 new songs last year.  Of the title, front man Kevin Murphy says he heard the phrase on a Phil Hendrie podcast!  In his high school days, Murphy played in the punk rock band The Familiars alo

Red Wanting Blue

Nov 22, 2013

"Hard working band makes good," to appropriate a line from Almost Famous!  It may have described Stillwater, but it works equally well for Red Wanting Blue, the enduring rock and roll act from Columbus, Ohio.  The band's following has grown over nine albums and 17 years of hard touring.  A three-record deal with Fanatic Records, signed in 2010, relieved the band of some of the mundane business activities while allowing them to remain fiercely independent and true to their craft.  Last year, Red Wanting Blue appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, VH1 and NPR.  Their songs, sung by S

This episode of No Cover, No Minimum Radio stars Tracy Silverman in his April 26, 2013, concert at the Spearfish Arts Center.
