During her career Pam Moret spent a lot of time as a leader. Before she retired Moret served as President and CEO brightpeak financial and Senior Vice President Strategic Development at Thrivent Financial.

South Dakota Hall of Fame

Next week the South Dakota Hall of Fame inducts nine new members. Since 1974, the hall has honored and recognized individuals who have shaped the fabric and culture of the state. Greta Chapman, president and CEO of the South Dakota Hall of Fame board, says the honored individuals also demonstrate a level of excellence that inspire others in the state. Members include important historical figures along with individuals from government, business, agriculture, sports, medicine, arts, entertainment and other fields.

Northwest Area Foundation Leader Speaks in Rapid City

The president and CEO of the Northwest Area Foundation says the demographic changes underway in this country make him optimistic about the future.   

But Kevin Walker says more needs to be done to create opportunities for poor and marginalized people in this economy if the United States is going to compete globally.

The Northwest Area Foundation is a $400-million dollar philanthropic organization that was started about 80 years ago.  It invests in projects across eight northwestern states and 75 indigenous nations.


Much of the strength of South Dakota’s rural communities is built upon the work of volunteers in non-profit and non-governmental organizations. Leaders interested in learning how to continue making South Dakota a better place to live, work and play are invited to series of luncheon conversations next week in Rapid City, Aberdeen and Mitchell. 

New Fund Celebrates South Dakota's 125th Anniversary

A group of Rapid City volunteers has started a new fund to help celebrate the state’s 125th anniversary. The Frontier Fund aims to raise at least $125 thousand in South Dakota and then give that money in small grants to local community non-profit organizations.  The idea is to not only meet needs in the state, but also build community and expand the notion of philanthropy through the fundraising effort. Charles Michael Ray spoke with fund organizers Matt Ehlman, Megan Clark and Madison Zimmerman-Dusek.

Philanthropy and voluntarism have played a unique role in the development of American society, but Americans have always been uneasy about the influence of great private wealth on public policy. Eric John Abrahamson, co-author of the new book Democracy and Philanthropy, is principal historian and founder of Vantage Point Historical Services. He'll talk about this tension in American history and lead a general discussion of the role of philanthropy in South Dakota and the United States today this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Theater at The Journey Museum.
