March is time to celebrate the accomplishments of women in the past and present. The Buffalo Gals kicked off Women’s History Month by recognizing those that are paving the way for change. 

Women share their experiences from years of community work during the three day Women’s Conference in Rapid City. Each story fit in with the event’s title Living Our Legacy.

Amanda Stadel’s focus is sex trafficking. She is on the Board of Directors for HEAL International and a volunteer Program Coordinator at the Of My Own in Arizona.

Dancers Choose Art Over Drugs

Dancing is a discipline that takes years of learning and practice to master. The Choose Art Performance is showcasing a young dance group in an effort to keeps kids away from drugs. Some of the dancers have been performing for over a decade.

A group 11 of dancers moves silently on stage as the choreographer counts to the tempo. Their hair is tied tight behind their heads. Each is dressed in all black except for a pair of white gloves with outlines of eyes drawn on the palms.

School health officials say the brain in young people who use or abuse drugs and alcohol does not fully rebound from the effects. They say abstaining from harmful chemical substances during adolescence is key to living a healthy adult life.

School health officials say young people use drugs and alcohol for a variety of reasons - to cope, to fit in with peers, or to have a new experience. And they say the long-term effects are alarming.

Paula Long Fox is a drug and alcohol prevention counselor at West Middle School in Rapid City.

Health officials say young people in South Dakota are using and abusing drugs and alcohol as early as 4th and 5th grade. In an effort to better understand why, local professionals are working inside schools and talking with students about coping with life¹s problems without turning to drugs and alcohol. Lifeways is a non-profit agency that is addressing the issue of juvenile substance abuse, the reasons behind it, and how to prevent it.
