THE GREAT AMERICAN READ is an eight-part series that explores and celebrates the power of reading, told through the prism of America's 100 best-loved novels (as chosen in a national survey). 

Joining us in the SDPB studios at the University of Sioux Falls is Jacqueline Palfy. She leads the Zandbroz Book Club.

Five years ago this weekend, an ice storm devastated eastern South Dakota, and our next guest had qualified for the Boston Marathon. She left the ice-coated crippled trees looming over her house and headed east for the chance to stand at the starting line with elite runners from across the globe.

It was April 15, 2013, and 18 minutes after receiving her medal, bombs exploded near the finish line.
