The Senate Judiciary committee is passing an almost identical bill from last year that allows permit-less carry of a concealed pistol.


In the last six months, South Dakota Secretary of State Shantel Krebs says she’s seen a sharp decline in concealed carry weapon permits issued.

Last year, the state renewed and issued just over 30,000 concealed carry permits. Krebs says that was an all-time high number of permits.

Krebs says that could be over anticipation of Hillary Clinton winning the presidential election.

House Lawmakers Fail To Override Gun Bill Vetos

Two vetoes by Governor Dennis Daugaard aimed at bills that relax state gun laws… stand.
The South Dakota House of Representatives failed to reach a two thirds majority to override the governor’s veto on allowing concealed pistols in the capitol building, as well as stripping the permit process for concealed carry elsewhere.
House lawmakers came up eleven votes shy of allowing gun owners what’s often called “Constitutional Carry” – the assumption that a citizen has a right to carry a concealed weapon without a permit.


A measure that allows gun owners to carry a concealed pistols without permits is moving through the statehouse...even after one version of it died.
The legislation just passed the state House of Representatives. It now moves to the State Senate where lawmakers tabled a similar measure.

The number of concealed carry permits reached an all-time high in South Dakota in December.
Secretary of State Shantel Krebs says the number of permits issued beat the previous state record by well over 3,000.

She says the number of concealed carry permits issued during a single year has more than doubled since 2008.

Krebs says her office saw an increase in permit applications following tragedies that get national attention…
