Weather Not Expected to Hinder Holiday Travel

South Dakota still hasn’t received large amounts of snow for being halfway through December, but areas near the Interstate-90 corridor received more than three inches of snow and the Vermillion-Yankton region saw freezing rain Tuesday morning. Meteorologist Todd Heitkamp with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says a storm system moving through Nebraska and Iowa will brush the southeastern corner Wednesday, but no other systems are expected until Christmas day. Heitkamp says travelers shouldn’t have to worry about slippery roads in South Dakota this weekend, but he says anyone planning to travel should first check the weather where they are and at their destination.

“Stay abreast of the weather forecast and make sure that you can adjust those travel plans if necessary. But the main thing is to stay informed, know what you’re going to encounter and then be willing and flexible at that point in time to adjust the travel plans if necessary. The heavy snow with this storm coming in Wednesday and Thursday morning is going to be across portions of Iowa, Nebraska, so if you’re traveling down there you definitely want to stay abreast of the weather conditions,” Heitkamp says.

Heitkamp says South Dakota will experience below normal temperatures during the next seven days, but wind chills aren’t expected to be life-threatening. He says travel problems will be minimal this weekend before Christmas.
