Veto on Senate Bill 159 Stands

State Senators upheld the Governor’s veto on Senate Bill 159. The bill exempts VFW and American Legion baseball coaches from sales and use tax. Proponents say the coaches are not paid well and the tax is a burden. But opponents, like Senator Larry Tidemann say exemption is unfair.

“If the other hockey coaches who are paid a minimal amount, doing the same thing, working with our children, if those Friends of Baseball coaches are being paid a minimal amount and having to pay the tax, and if the soccer coaches are doing that, then I don’t feel that we should exempt one group,” Tidemann says.

The measure failed to gain two-thirds support from the members elect, so the Governor’s veto is sustained.
