The 2016 North American Unicycle Championship and Convention comes to Rapid City next month. Shawn Hayford is the outreach director for the YMCA in Rapid City. He’s also the coordinator for this year’s unicycle competition.
Hayford says the event brings together some of the top unicyclists from across yhe United States and Canada. He says the contestants also include first timers who are just learning to ride. Hayford says the event is the North American qualifier before the world competition.
But he says some of the activities at the week-long competition are just for fun too, like the unicycle trials final and street finals.
“Those are very fun, spectator friendly X-Game-ish and they’ll be doing, with streets they’re doing tricks on obstacles and with trials what they’re doing is we’ll set specific lines for them to do for instance from the ground to the roof of this car and then down this 2 by 4 to get to the ground,” says Hayford.
Hayford says all the events are free to the public to come and watch. The North American Unicycle Championship and Convention starts July 9th and ends July 15th in Rapid City. To find out more information, visit the Rapid City's NAUCC Facebook page.
