Thune Gets Update on Legislative Issues in Pierre

U.S. Senator John Thune says he wants to get an idea of what issues are affecting South Dakota at both the state and federal levels.  Thune says this is why he’s visiting Pierre Thursday. Thune is attending the South Dakota Chamber of Business luncheon to meet with business leaders and learn how they’re driving the economy. He’s also meeting with party caucuses and legislators to talk proposals going on at Statehouse. Thune says he tries to stay informed while in Washington.

“There’s a lot of discussion this year around the issue of education, which I think is important to our economy. I think the jobs and economy are the issues that most people pay attention to. Most people tend to be concerned about pocketbook issues, it’s those kitchen-table issues—whether or not they’re going to be able to pay for their kid’s education, whether or not they’re going to have a good job now and in the future, whether or not they’re going to be able to save a little bit for their retirement. Those are issues that I think not only the state legislature, but those of us that represent our state’s in Congress need to be focused on,” Thune says.

Thune says he’s always impressed at the state legislature’s ability to accomplish their task on time, while proposing and balancing a budget. He says more of that is needed in Congress.
