State Stares Down Winter Storm

National Weather Service

Most of South Dakota is set to pick up several inches of snow to end the work week.

Mike Gillispie with the National Weather Service says Sioux Falls and several communities in central and southeastern parts of the state are under a Winter Storm Warning tomorrow.

"Kind of along and north of Highway 18, up to, oh, the Flandreau area, over towards Huron, Redfield, and then out to the Chamberlain area. The areas under the Winter Storm Warning - we are looking for the potential of 5 to 8 inches of snow through that area. Most of that snow will fall during the daytime areas tomorrow - starting a little early out in the central part of the state and then as you get to the East here, we're looking at most of that snow falling from, say late morning through late afternoon in the Sioux Falls area, here."

Gillispie says two to five inches are in store for counties under a Winter Weather Advisory.  He says winds will range from 20 to 30 miles per hour, causing blowing and drifting snow. Gillispie says the mercury will also drop.

"We are looking at high temperatures on Friday in the single digits to middle teens for much of Eastern South Dakota. Again, same thing on Saturday. A lot of single digits across the Eastern part of the state. And, lows Friday night and Saturday night are going to be well below zero for much of the area - the coldest temperatures look like they are are going to be in the northeastern part of the state where we're looking at ten to fifteen degrees below zero."

Gillispie says wind chills could reach 30 degrees below zero in some East River locations this weekend. He says Winter Weather Advisories get underway overnight for areas in West River.

Parts of north central and northeastern South Dakota are also under an advisory -- along with south central and far southeastern regions.
