State Republicans, Democrats Squabble Over Petition Signatures

Officials with the South Dakota Republican Party urge state residents to look into proposed 2018 ballot measures before signing petitions.

State GOP Chairman Dan Lederman says the party wants voters to understand what they are signing. South Dakota Republicans wrote on its "Don't Sign on the Line" Facebook page that the State's ballot is "continually being used as a mad scientist's laboratory."

Republicans have often criticized money from out of state sources and have proposed changes to the ballot initiative system.

South Dakota Democratic Party Chairman Sam Parkinson says the initiative and referendum process is a reminder of how out of touch the Republicans are with state residents.

He says citizens are using that process to ensure state law actually reflects the values of South Dakotans.
