Senators Resurrect Transgender Bill

A measure dealing with the South Dakota High School Activities Association’s transgender policy has been brought back to life. House Bill 1195 would repeal the Association’s policy which was adopted last year. The measure received a two hour hearing in the senate education committee but was killed by a vote of 4 to 3.

However, a Senator has asked that the measure receive a hearing from the full Senate. This legislative maneuver is called a smoke out. Senator Bill Van Gerpen supports the smoke out. Van Gerpen says this is an important topic and many citizens have concerns about the South Dakota High School Activities Association’s policy.

"Our constituents elected us to be their voice in this chamber. And I believe they deserve the right, they have the right that they ought to hear us in a full scale Senate debate on this particular issue because it affects a lot of them," says Van Gerpen.

Thirteen senators supported a full debate on the Senate for House Bill 1195 - enough to get the measure smoked out and placed on the debate calendar.
