Senator Rounds: Those On No Fly List Have 2nd Amendment Rights

U.S. Senator Mike Rounds

U.S. Senator Mike Rounds questions a call by the Obama Administration to prohibit someone on the no fly list from owning a gun in the United States.

The no fly list is maintained by federal intelligence agencies who flag those they deem a potential terrorist or threat.   President Obama says anyone on that list should not be able to walk into a gun shop and purchase a firearm.

But Senator Mike Rounds worries this would violate the constitution.

“Being able to fly is one thing but constitutional protections for someone to be able to have an arms, to have the right to bear arms, to keep and bear arms, is a constitutionally protected right.  And, if you’re going to take that away from someone there has to be a due process involved in it,” says Rounds

Rounds says the U.S. Congress may consider the issue of setting laws to guide the courts on this issue.  He says in the end it’s still important to keep guns out of the hands of those who would do damage.  He says the repeal of part of the Patriot Act hurt the ability of intelligence agencies to stop terrorism.
