Senate Approves Speed to Pass Bill

Lawmakers are supporting a bill allowing drivers to speed in some circumstances. House Bill 1124 authorizes travelers to go ten miles per hour over the speed limit when passing a vehicle moving slower than the limit on two lane roads posted at 65 miles per hour or more. Senator Brock Greenfield is a prime sponsor of the bill. He says it’s a safety measure.

“Representative Tulson had done some math and determined that were he to pass somebody at 75 as opposed to 70 miles an hour, he gets around that car and completes the pass four seconds more quickly,” Greenfield says. “So, as you can imagine, tucking into that lane of traffic sooner would create less situations by which a person could get into an accident.”

Senators passed the bill unanimously. It now heads to the Governor.
