Scientists Present Real Science At Comic Con

Victoria Wicks

There is a difference between science and science fiction, of course. But the two converge at events like Comic Con. At the Denver Comic Con this summer, real scientists included three students and a lecturer from the physics department at the School of Mines and Technology.

They wore costumes, diving into the Comic Con environment that includes fans dressed like characters from Star Wars, Star Trek, and superhero fiction. But they gave a presentation titled Shedding Light on Dark Matter & Dark Energy, drawing on their education and expertise working in conjunction with the neutrino lab at Lead.

These events are held on six continents, with dozens of conventions held every year in the United States alone. Hundreds of thousands of people attend. The Denver event drew 115,000. So all these fans of science fiction are exposed to a real science education.

SDPB's Victoria Wicks sat down with three of the School of Mines presenters to talk about art imitating life, and life imitating art.
