Rennovated USGS Flood Warning Station In Rapid City

This month marks the one year anniversary of the Colorado flash flooding that roared out of the Rockies, killing eight people and causing an estimated damage of over one-billion dollars.

The Black Hills also has a history of catastrophic floods—but today the creeks that flow out of the hills are monitored by a network of stream gages that can act as an early warning system for flash flooding – giving crucial minutes needed to evacuate.

On Wednesday morning in Rapid City the USGS is dedicating the newly renovated gaging station.  USGS officials say the instruments do more than just monitor flooding.

The new Rapid City stream gage station is being dedicated the morning of September 3rd at Founders Park.   There is an open house starting at 9:30 with the mayor and other public dignitaries scheduled to give short remarks at about 10am.

You can find the USGS webpage for real time stream flow data on creeks and rivers across the statehere.
