A Native American festival is taking place at Rapid City’s Main Street Square on Saturday (Aug. 24).

The event was inspired by the Passage of Wind and Water sculpture project that’s being created at the square.

The goal of “A Gathering of People - Wind and Water” is to bring together the Rapid City community around art, creativity and the sculpture project.

Festival coordinator Sandy Swallow says with its roots in the Black Hills and the Badlands, the Lakota culture reflects the wind and water themes of the Main Street Square sculpture project.

But Swallow adds that the festival, like the sculpture, is intended to unite all people in the area.

“It’s for everybody,” Swallow explains. “It’s a celebration. It’s a celebration of life, and of the summer and of the Black Hills and that we can all get together and extend hands of friendship to one another and…I just hope a lot of people will come. “

The day-long festival includes a Native American art market, music by flutist Lakota George and the Standing Horse Drum Group and a short performance by the Lakota Ways theatre group.

An honoring of veterans is also scheduled.
