Missing Brookings Man Found Dead

The body of a missing Brookings man was found in a grain bin Wednesday night. A two-day search of the bin was conducted by authorities.

The body of 26-year-old Jacob Heisinger was identified by his family at 7:50 p.m.

It took two days for officials to remove grain from the bin. Some of Heisinger’s belongings were found at the top of the bin which lead authorities to isolate the search. No foul play is suspected and Heisinger was alone.

Brookings Police Chief Jeff Miller suspects Heisinger fell through a pressurized hatch at the top of the grain bin.

Heisinger was last seen at a Brookings bar on Oct. 22.  Miller says Heisinger was reported missing Monday morning and the search began. Tuesday morning an AgFirst Farmer’s Cooperative employee contacted police that Heisinger may be in the bin.

“I know there’s a lot of confusion about that, people are asking ‘Well why did us take so long?’ we didn’t know until Monday,” Miller says.

Miller says it wasn’t until after the weekend, his family suspected something was wrong.

An autopsy is being performed in Sioux Falls.
